Vice President, Tax | Prudential Financial | Newark, NJ

This position is for an FSA, with at least 7-10 years experience after fellowship.

The Tax Actuary has to partner with the Businesses, Corporate Actuarial and tax accountants and attorneys. Externally, the same type of partnerships need to be developed.

The Tax Actuary has general responsibility with respect to tax reserves to review and document current reserving practices. This includes:
  • Answering business unit questions with respect to calculation of these reserves
  • Keeping the businesses apprised of developments that could affect tax reserves, including IRS/Treasury rulings; court cases; law changes; NAIC actions
  • Reviewing and determining whether the reserving rules are being interpreted correctly and whether they are being applied consistently throughout the enterprise and documented appropriately
  • Consolidation and analysis of tax reserves for all insurance companies
  • Supporting deductions on audit
  • Supporting M&A analyses and implementation

In addition, the tax actuary will add value through the creation and implementation of tax planning and surplus management ideas across all businesses. The tax actuary will be heavily involved in reinsurance (captive; third party; intra family) because of the tax impact on these transactions and the tax impact of these transactions.

To facilitate both compliance and planning, the tax actuary will participate in cross functional teams working on issues affecting more than one area and will participate in industry and professional groups on current tax actuarial issues. These include principles based on reserving for all products; 2001 CSO issues; and preferred mortality tables. For example, the Academy is currently considering revisions to the nonforfeiture rules. Prudential will have a tax actuary involved in or monitoring this work to assure that changes are made in a tax efficient manner.

The tax actuary will also become involved in other aspects of insurance tax planning such as DAC tax planning and tax capacity planning.

The tax actuary will be the point person for definition of life insurance compliance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • FSA, with at least 7-10 years experience after fellowship
  • Desired experience - actuarial, product pricing, financial reporting or valuation role in more than one business is preferred
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills - must be able to effectively communicate tax issues to non tax professionals and actuarial issues to tax professionals
  • Strong partnership skills
  • Ability to work with professionals from other disciplines
  • Creative and innovative thinker
  • Ability to plan and work on multiple projects with several businesses at the same time

  • Overtime will be required, especially during peak periods
